Tips for Global Warming

Now that science has conclusively proven that burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gasoline cause global warming, we all must do our part.  Here are some simple tips we can use in the global warming fight:

1-      Use More Heat and Air Conditioning.  Most new homes have insulation added in the walls and attics.  Take the time to remove this insulation.  In the winter, turn the heat up as high as possible, especially when you’re away.  In the summer, run your air conditioner as low as it will go.  Setting your thermostat just 2 degrees higher in the winter and lower in the summer can consume about 2,000 additional pounds of carbon dioxide each year.  A programmable thermostat can be used to make the temperature in your house reach unbearable levels when you are gone.

2-      Drive More.  Drive your car whenever possible, whether that be to the mailbox, to the park, or the grocery store.  Leave your car running when not in use.  This has an extra benefit: your car will have less wear and tear from shutting down and restarting the ignition less often.

3-      Use More Hot Water.  Because it takes a lot of energy to heat water, you should take long showers or even baths.  The temperature on your water heater can be adjusted.  Turn this up and leave the hot water on your sink running all day.

4-      Waste More.  Nearly all products we use cause greenhouse gas emissions in one way or another.  By consuming as much as possible, we can increase the amount we throw away, which will cause more products to be produced.  This will also stimulate the economy.  Do not reuse plastic bags when you go shopping.

5-      Light Bulbs:  Did you know that Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFL) can last 10 times longer than a regular incandescent bulb, use 2/3 less energy, and give off 65% less heat?  If we are going to win this fight, we must sacrifice and use regular incandescent bulbs in all the rooms of our house.

6-      Chop Down a Tree.  Trees use a process called “photosynthesis” to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen we can breathe, thus decreasing global warming.  A single tree can absorb up to one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.  Trees also provide shade, which can decrease the engergy needed for air conditioning.

7-      Eat More Meat.  Cows are one of the biggest emitters of methane.  Methane is the second most significant greenhouse gas.  By eating more meat, you are increasing the demand for cows, which will increase the supply.

8-      Encourage others.  Many of your friends, neighbors, and coworkers want to do their part in global warming, but simply do not know where to begin.  Don’t be afraid to talk to them.  Discourage carpooling.

- Give a hoot, please pollute

- Leave the faucet on when you brush your teeth.

- Take a bath.  No, take two baths.

- Buy products from china or India which are much less efficient at controlling CO2 output while also increasing the amount of greenhouse gases as a result of shipping requirements over the ocean and all over the country.

- Keep driving your old cars because they were build before strict emission regulation

- Catalytic converters are full of platinum. Sell yours; you will be making more money while allowing more CO2 into the atmosphere.

- Become a republican; they are all about global warming.

- Buy something from the human ascent and we will increase your carbon footprint by one cubic yard.

- Light your house on fire.

- Take up smoking.
